Washington DC, May 31: United States President Donald Trump has reiterated his claims on Thursday that China is suffering from a trade deficit and facing most in a trade spat with America, stating the preliminary tariffs on Chinese exports are having a “devastating effect” on Beijing.

At the White Hosue, the US president told reporters, “I think we’re doing very well with China,” adding, “China would love to make a deal with us. We had a deal, they broke the deal. I think if they had it to do again they wouldn’t have done what they did.”

Earlier this month, Trump has accused China of reneging over its previously made commitment in the trade meetings, which ended without reaching an agreement, and immediately he imposed tariffs hike on Chinese goods worth $200 billion.

Trump continued to claim Beijing was paying for the US tariff hikes, generating a bonanza for the American government, according to Dawn news reports.

“The tariffs are having a devastating effect on China. People are fleeing the country with their companies,” Trump said. “These companies are leaving for Vietnam, other parts of Asia.” “I can tell you, China very much wants to make a deal,” he said. “China is becoming a very weakened nation.”

Bill Nelson of Doane Advisory Services told AFP: “China made a flurry of purchases at the beginning of the year… but it has been buying very little from the US lately.”
