The International world body, United Nation on 2 Oct, the birth anniversary of the Indian legend Mahatma Gandhi, observed the day as the International Non-Violence Day.

While addressing an event at the UN general headquarters in New York UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak said that people are not living the dream Gandhi envisioned. On the 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the UN on Monday observed the day as the International Non-Violence Day with Indian-Americans remembering the mentor of peace across the US.

During the even Lajack, expressing his grief said that Gandhi did not dream of this world, he always against violence and exactly the opposite is happening today. “Unfortunately, we are not yet living in the world that Gandhi dreamt of. Many actors still use violence as their tool of choice. Every day there is new evidence of the destruction and human suffering, which result from this choice,” Lajcak said.

He further added that the human rights and humanitarian laws are being violated constantly as that intolerance and hate speech have become the key features of the world. He said that apart from this the condition is all the more deteriorating as the issues of conflicts, violent extremism and terrorism are increasing day by day.

“Even the planet is suffering from a violence of sorts, due to the harmful impact of human activities. The message of non-violence is therefore needed more today than ever,” Lajcak told.

Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated across the US including New York, Washington DC, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and San Francisco. Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna, in Washington DC, offered floral tribute to the statue of Gandhi located in front of the Embassy. Other than this a cultural programme was also held which was attended by around 200 prominent members of the community.
