There are cars that are all about comfort and luxury, and then something like a full-blown M sports car is all about fun and driving. But what if we say BMW has tried offering everything at once, and that too with a reasonable price tag? You won’t trust us, right? Well, it is true, and therefore, today we have a comprehensive review of the BMW M340i, a practical sedan with sportscar DNA, just for you.

Exterior

A typical BMW design is what makes the M340i hard to resist. Now, before the larger kidney grille could have reached this particular product, BMW made its official launch in India. The approach here is simple – “Why rework something that’s already perfect.” But deep down, we know they have reworked so many great SUVs and sedans from the lineup.

For now, let’s not deviate from the point and to dig a little deeper, let us go across the exterior to find out what is new and what attracts so much attention. Starting with the front fascia, the performance sedan looks quite aggressive, all thanks to a wide body kit that features a massive bumper with lots of sharp edges. Lower down, the bumper inculcates an air intake, enough for adequate cooling. Then, just above it is a perfectly sized kidney grille flanked by BMW Adaptive LED headlamps.

Moving towards the side profile, one would realise that the changes are limited, but it is one of those views that is nothing less than perfect. Short overhangs, free-flowing roofline and long wheelbase do add to the character of the M340i. However, it is the introduction of 19-inch M light alloy wheels in 791 M styling that makes it more appealing. The changes on the side profile also include caps for the outside rear-view mirrors.

In contrast, the rear end uses a minimalistic approach. Though the M340i uses the xDrive all-wheel drive system, the ‘xDrive’ badge is now gone. A basic yet sophisticated design with slim taillamps and a BMW logo at the centre of the boot adds to that good-look factor. Time to explain why we called it sophisticated. It is because of the sporty rear diffuser that comes finished in gloss black. Then, there are twin exhausts that go perfectly with the diffuser and look like a complete unit.

For those who still feel that there is not much customisation option available on the new BMW M340i, the carmaker is offering it in exclusive shades, including – Mineral White, Dravit Grey, Black Saphhire and Tanzanite Blue.

Interior

The customisation does not end there as the interior is being offered in Alcantara/Sensatec combination material and is finished in Black. The premium Blue stitching that works in contrast with the Black shade adds to that premium quotient one would ask from a sedan priced like this. To explain it further, premium than what BMW offers on the regular 3 Series.

The sports sedan is also being offered with sports seats that are firmer than the ones available in the standard model. Now, it is something that is not just an additional offering but also a requirement. When cornering fast, these units try to keep you stable and give some serious confidence, making it a driver’s delight.

As soon as we are inside the cabin of the new M340i, there are some major highlights that require mention. For instance, the massive glass roof. With a dark theme inside, one would definitely need some sense of space and air. So, good job with that. Then comes features like three-zone climate control, 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound system, BMW curved display and ambient lighting that does feel like one of the best in the segment.

The usage of carbon fibre trim at the centre console also acts as a premium touch and is definitely another major highlight that one cannot miss.

Engine, Transmission & Performance

The story under the hood remains the same with a 2998cc six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It is BMW’s very own powerful motor that has been tuned to churn out a massive 374 horsepower and 500Nm of peak torque, pushing the M340i to clock a triple-digit speed in 4.4 seconds. You heard that right, just four point four seconds and that is lightning fast! Other than this, a 48V mild-hybrid system is always assisting the already powerful internal combustion motor to churn the maximum out of it.

So, what helps BMW achieve this amazing feat? Firstly, the engine under the hood comes paired with a reliable eight-speed Steptronic transmission and we must tell you that it is an automatic setup that helps in performing smoother yet faster gear shifts. The availability of the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel makes these shifts more handy. Then, there is BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system that works in conjunction with the M Sport rear differential to provide enough traction and stability. Basically, the entire ecosystem works fantastically, resulting in unmatched performance.

There is even an engine cover under the hood to preserve this precious motor from the harsh climate outside.

Safety Features

While the new M340i is assembled here in India itself, it still offers a solid build quality. Several safety features such as six airbags, side impact protection, tyre pressure indicator, electric parking camera, Attentiveness Assistance, ABS and electronic vehicle immobilizer make it even safer. Also, some more safety aids, including Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control and Brake Assist are also a part of the spec sheet.

A few additional details that you might want to know but are frequently missed out on is the after-sales service. BMW states that the automaker is offering a Condition Based Service with several plans. These might range anywhere between 3 years/40,000 kilometres to 10 years/ 2 Lakh kilometres, depending upon the customers’ requirements.
