Indian railways put another feather in the hat by confirming General Electric’s (GE) first prototype of diesel locomotive post Make in India motivated deal of worth ₹16.7 crores in 2015.

As per GE Transportation, the new units have been provided with an Evolution Series engine as well as an electronic fuel injection system for improved fuel efficiency. The company also claimed that the individual axle-control AC propulsion technology will improve hauling capability and also it will decrease life-cycle cost. The locomotives have also been digitally enabled for predictive analytics to increase availability and reliability.

The American conglomerated conducted a series of vigorous test in India and US before landing the approval of the Indian railways. The operations are likely to commence from fourth quarter of 2018. As per the agreement, all locomotives built in Marhowra (GE’s second factory in Uttar Pradesh) will constitute 70% localized content said a news report by Financial Express.

  • An agreement was signed post Make in India initiative to upgrade railway infrastructure with GE’s 4500 horsepower diesel-electric evolution series prototype locomotives.
