Bangalore is already known to be the IT capital of the country along with being the city having the most ideal weather. But many people does not think that Bangalore is an ideal place to pursue college education as the country being an “Engineering fanatic” and with the city not having an IIT, the most elite institution for pursuing an engineering course in India.  But it is not unobserving that Bangalore also contains several of India’s premiere college institutions in the other well regarded fields. Here is a list of such institutions which are regard to be the BEST in the country in their own course!

National Law School of India University

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is a institution constituted by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for undergraduate and graduate legal education in India.The school was officially founded on August 29, 1987. It was the first ever National Law university to be established. By popular estimates, the school consistently ranks as the most prestigious law school in India.

The school is presently located in Nagarbhavi, a suburb in Bangalore after moving from the Bangalore university campus in 1991. All admissions in NLSIU, for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs are made on the basis of performance in the CLAT. According to Legally India in 2012, for the Undergraduate CLAT, a total of 26000 students contested for a mere 65 seats, making the examination one of the most competitive in India.

The Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library at NLSIU is known to be the largest law library in the country housing a collection of over 40,000 bound volumes in addition to periodical holdings. The institute has an active student based activity with the functioning of a healthy student bar association. NLSIU are elitists in Moot court competitions winning the prestigious Phillip.C.Jessup International law Moot Court Competition twice.

NLSIU was ranked first on both the Outlook India Top 10 Law Colleges of 2011 and Mint Top 15 Law Colleges of 2009 and first on the India Today India’s Best law Colleges 2012. 

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore

Nowadays a MBA degree has become very exotic and most of the people are interested in one. For that, Bangalore boasts Indian Institute of Management. The Indian institute of Management (also known as IIMB) is a public business school located in Bangalore. Founded in 1973, it was the third IIM to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmadabad.

The common ways of getting into IIM’s are by either writing Common Admission Test(CAT) , which is written by students who have freshly graduated or people who have a work experience lesser than 4 years. The other way is by writing Graduate Management Admission Test(GMAT), which is written by candidates with 5 to 15 years of work experience.

There are several student-run clubs and societies at IIM Bangalore. The student bodies are divided into clubs, mini clubs, chapters and societies are managed by the students themselves and are governed by the Student Affairs Council.

IIMB was ranked fourth in the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report in the Asia-Pacific region for 2013. In India IIMB was ranked first by the Zee News India’s best b-school survey 2012 and second by the Hindustan Times  India’s top 50 business schools of 2011.

Indian Institute of Science

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public university for scientific research and higher education located in Bangalore. Established in 1899 with active support from Jamshetji Tata it is also locally known as the “Tata Institute”. It acquired the status of a Deemed University in 1958. IISc is widely regarded as India’s finest institution in its field, and has made significant contribution to advanced computing, space, and nuclear technologies.

Admission into IISc is highly competitive. Usually only the top 0.01 percent candidates qualifying the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination are able to clear the cutoff for M. E. / M. Tech. admissions. Depending on the department and the number of students, the cutoff can get much higher.

Pravega is the annual science, technology and cultural festival of Indian Institute of Science. Started in 2013 by the undergraduates of IISc, the fest advertises itself as an eclectic blend of science, technology and culture packed into three October days.

In 2011, IISc was the only Indian university ranked in the top 500 by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, at 301-400th place overall. IISc managed to maintain its overall ranking through the 2012 and 2013 rankings.  According to The India Reputation Rankings, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is in the first position.
