University Grants Commission Chairman D P Singh on Friday spoke about Implementing Anti-Ragging Policy while inaugurating Astronomy Centre for Educators (ACE) at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics.

” The Universities and colleges must take steps to ensure that the anti-ragging rule is strictly implemented. The UGC has always been strict about ragging incidents that are reported in educational institutions and will continue to act against them,” Singh said.

In accordance with the new regulations, every university is instructed to construct an anti-ragging committee and also consist of an anti-ragging squad who are responsible for regular and surprise checks of hostels, canteens, washrooms etc.

The regulation also mentions that the colleges must constitute of an anti-ragging cell on campus and the students should be made aware of the available options to seek help from. The regulation also said that provision should be made for CCTV cameras and alarm bells in case of emergency.

He also added that monitoring the implementation of policies was a major challenge. “We expect the V-Cs and college officials to know their roles and act responsibly… we have awarded universities and colleges with functional autonomy so that the institutions are self-empowered to implement the regulations in the interest of students and the institution.”

Not just that Singh also mentioned the ban on the sale of junk and unhealthy food in college and university canteens. Singh recommended that the canteens must sell healthy food to the students.

“ Based on the health advisories, we want universities and colleges to engage with students and spread awareness about the possible demerits of consuming junk food. Canteens and other food outlets must also be strengthened so that students are provided with healthier foods options, only then will there be implementation in the true sense,” said Singh.

While appreciating the ACE, he mentioned ” By 2020 we are planning to accredit all non- accredited institutions. And through the Paramarsh scheme, we want NAAC accredited colleges to mentor the non-accredited colleges about the procedure of acquiring the accreditation,” Singh said.
