A sequel to the National Award-winning Badhaai Ho starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Saniya Malhotra, Badhaai Do revolves around the lives of two closeted members of the gay and lesbian community. Rajkummar Rao features Shardul, a gay cop hiding his identity to fit in the society. In the film, there seems an event where he admits being gay and a police officer is the biggest irony of his life. His virile accent and the chiselled body he flaunts on-screen break away from the prototypical depiction of a gay man on screen.

Bhumi Pednekar plays the character of Suman, a physical education teacher who is an unapologetic lesbian portraying a brave female character on screen. The duo tie knots in a lavender marriage to fit in the society as ‘normal people.’ The matrimonial compromise situation turns complicated when Suman falls for Rimjhim, played by Chum Darang. The bond between Rimjhim and Suman seems exceptionally beautiful akin a normal couple.

Chum Darang, a North-Eastern actress brings her elegance onscreen and doesn’t seem any less assertive portraying such a bold part along with Rajkummar and Bhumi as leads. Meanwhile, the noisy neighbours, unannounced relatives and the family members pressurize the couple to produce a child.

The first half of the movie centres around the problems faced by Bhumi and Rajkumar living as a couple and dealing with their real-life personalities. Their object to fit in the society made them tie the knot in a lavender marriage. However, the second half depicts the braveness of the duo to make their families accept them and normalise homosexuality.

Badhaai Do attempts to normalise the concept of homosexuality. The big-screen exhibits the gay and lesbian community and their relationships with an aim to aware the orthodox people in the society. The film also explores the evolution of the families of homosexual people and their ways to deal with the societal taboo. While Bollywood has produced several films revolving around the gay and lesbian community, this film strives to bestow the perspective of families and their acceptance towards the homosexuality.
