OxygenOS Google Duo Integration

OnePlus has announced that it will make the video calling app Google Duo as its default app for video calling on its devices. The feature was rolled out in Open Beta builds for the OnePlus 6 and 6T earlier this week. The Google Duo integration will be released for the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, and OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T with Android Pie update.

Although Google Duo will be made as a native function for video calling, users will still be able to access the traditional carrier video calling option through. In order to access the traditional video calling option, users will have to head to Contact >Select contact >See all >Choose video call to select this option.

With Google Duo’s deeper integration on the OnePlus devices, users will not have to rely on third-party apps like Skype, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger in order to make a video call. Video calling feature on OnePlus phones will be handled exclusively by Google Duo.

The video calls made with Google Duo will also show up in the user’s recent call logs. The integration will take place across multiple native functions including call logs, contacts, dial pad, and messaging.

The new update including this feature has already been rolled out for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T with OxygenOS 9.0.12 and OxygenOS 9.0.4 respectively. The update also brings with itself general bug fixes, minor system improvements, and January Android security patch for both devices.

Prior to this, OnePlus had announced the Google Lens integration in its native camera app. Google Lens uses machine learning in order to figure out relevant details about the objects at which the camera is pointed at, like books, building, and more. It also lets scan QR codes.

Apart from this, OnePlus is expected to release a 5G variant of its OnePlus 6T which will cost around ₹15,000-₹20,000 more than the 4G variant of the device. This means that the 5G phone from OnePlus would be the most expensive phone from the company so far. However, company co-founder Pete Lau said the device will actually be priced without profit in mind. So the reason for the price bump would be the cost of implementing 5G components in the phone.
