SBMM (Skill based matchmaking) has been adopted by games like Call Of Duty and Fortnite. The feature has been loved and criticized. Some say it is good since they can play with players of their level while some say it has made the game more intense and serious. In the series of adapting this feature, developers of Apex legends have confirmed that the game too has the feature.
SBMM will become the norm for most MP games, as there is indisputable evidence through data that it helps out something like 80-90% of the community with retention for most of those games… which hurts us 10%’ers, I know. Still though, ours might need some tuning potentially

pretty sure something was turned on before the end of Season 2, but I’d have to ask the team about specifics and updates

According to the developer Eric Hewitt, the SBMM feature has been in the game since the end of the second season. He said the feature helps over 80% of the gamer in improving their game. He admitted that the feature still needs some tuning.
Another developer, Michael Kalas says that SBMM does not have to do anything with one’s skill. The feature is based on a player’s Gunplay, which means his accuracy, kills, and other factors.
In all seriousness, it's NOT based on Ranked, but performance in any 3s contributes. What performance means is always in flux, but I imagine it is always based on gunplay metrics.

The SBMM is the center of discussion in the Reddit gaming community. According to Eric, this feature is becoming normal for every game, but players have been critical of those decisions as well. The game has its own pros and cons the feature is improving the skills of players. With the increasing skills, the game will take time to put a player in a game.
