Maharashtra government will implement the Seventh Pay Commission from January 1,
2019. The state treasury will have to bear an extra burden of 40,000 crore rupees for implementing the 7th pay commission.

Junior Finance Minister Deepak Kesarkar while replying to the issue that was raised by MLC Kapil Patil, said that while the state government had appointed a committee under retired bureaucrat KP Bakshi on the issue and their report is expected to soon, the state will not wait for their report and the implementation will begin from January.
Patil also asked whether as per the central government’s norms the government staff in the state will get a five day wee. Kesarkar replied that it will be decided by the Bakshi committee.

Kesarkar announced in the Legislative Council, “The decision will benefit close to 20 lakh state government employees.”

“The arrears of Seventh Pay Commission will be given with retrospective effect from January 2016, while the dearness allowance will be given retrospectively for the last 14 month. The state government will require Rs 20,000 crore to pay 7th pay commission and its arrears from January 2016 from which the pay band width was revised. There are nearly 19 lakh government employees and the government requires Rs 5000 crore annually to revise the pay band,” he said.

State government and semi-government employees and teachers had gone on a strike over the issue on August 9.
