Congress leader Rahul Gandhi undertook a two-day visit in Kerala to assess the relief operations in the flood-affected district. The leader represents the Wayanad constituency in the Lower House.

Rahul Gandhi on his first day of the visit met the locals and talked to them about the relief operations. The locals apprised the leader that operation is going okay. The leader also met the officers of the Collectorate Office in Malappuram. He reviewed the relief measures of local administration and visited the relief camps in Boodanam Church in Nilambur and Malappuram in Kerala.

As quoted by ANI, Rahul Gandhi told the media, “I also went to some of the sites where there are landslides. In the camp, people were saying they need medicines and cleaning equipment. This is a tragedy and rest of the nation and the national government must help Kerela.”

From here, he urged the ruling government to provide help to the flood-affected Kerala. He mentioned that he called up Prime Minister and informed him about the situation.

While the leader was visiting his constituency for assessing the relief measures of the disaster, his party speaking to the press in Delhi, alleged that the Union government is not handling the situation efficiently. The party condemned the government’s measures and accused the centre of taking a laidback and insensitive attitude to the plight of flood-affected victims.

Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill demanded Centre to declare flood as “National Emergency”. He also accused the ruling BJP government of providing financial aid to the states unequally. The party said that despite the fact that estimated losses in Kerala due to flood last year touched Rs. 10000 crores, the centre has only released Rs. 3000 crores for the state. Uttar Pradesh which is not hit by flood as severely has received Rs. 200 crores and Asam only got Rs. 250 crores.

Shergill also urged the government to come out with a white paper on flood preparedness,
flood management projects and rehabilitation schemes for displacements caused due to the heavy flooding in almost nine states.
