The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday registered a handsome victory to add Patkura Assembly seat in its tally. The Biju Janata Party (BJD) won the Assembly Seat defeating its closest rival with over a margin of around 17,655 votes.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) nominee Savitri Agarwal secured 95,162 votes against 77,507 votes bagged by BJP’s Bijoy Mohapatra who stood second in the tally. While Congress nominee Jayanta Kumar Mohanty could only secure 2090 votes. Polling for Patkura Assembly Seat held on July 20.

The counting of votes took place under heavy heavy security at Kendrapara Autonomous College. The entire counting process was video graphed as per ECI directions, an election official said.

The Assembly Polls in Patkura seat was originally slated for April 29. However, it was deferred to May 19 in the wake of the death of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Bed Prakash Agarwalla. He was the sitting BJD MLA of Patkura and had also defeated BJP’s Bijoy Mohapatra in the 2014 general elections.

In the wake of his death, BJD has named Bed Prakask Agarwalla’s wife Savitri Agrawal who is pitted against Bijoy Mohapatra of BJP and Jayant Mohanty of Congress.

Later, the ECI postponed the election further for another 60 days in view of cyclone ‘Fani’ that hit the state on May 3.

BJD-led Naveen Patnaik in the state polls stormed back to power winning 112 seats, 5 less than what they had won in 2014 State polls. While BJP won 23, Congress 9 and one each bag by CPI-M and Independent Candidate. Odisha has a total of 147 Assembly seats.
