One comment has brought a lot of criticism to the CM of Goa. After Manohar Parrikar’s comment, the hashtag, #GirlsWhoDrinkBeer has gone viral across the nation. The comment on 9th February was considered a derogatory remark against women.

Manohar Parrikar was a speaker at the State Youth Parliament by the Legislature Secretariat in Porvorim. In his speech, the CM said, “I have begun to fear now because even the girls have started drinking beer.” This isn’t one of those statements taken out of context. Parrikar was referring to the drug peddling in Goa and the huge damage it was causing. He spoke about how his government was trying to crack down on the drug network. During his speech, he advised parents to keep an eye on their kids as well.

Following the speech, the CM was the centre of most twitter posts. He was called out for being ‘sexist’ and ‘patriarchal’. Some women even put up pictures of them drinking beer as a statement.

This is another example of how careful politicians need to be. It’s not even about the progressive versus the outdated. It’s just about thinking before speaking. Especially in today’s age, when girls are doing a lot more than just drinking beer and it’s their right to.
