According to BJP sources, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was invited for lunch by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday.
Bhagwat was in Rudrapur on Thursday for the Sangh’s volunteer education and training programme, and reached the capital on Friday for the meeting.
This meeting primarily gains importance as it comes just ahead of the Presidential Polls. Both NDA and non-NDA parties are holding meeting to come up with a consensus candidate for the polls. The last date to file the nominations is 28 June. The election will be held on July 17 and the results are likely to be declared by 20 July. The term of incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee ends on 24 July.
Though any political significance to the meeting is denied saying that it was a pre-decided courtesy meet.
Shiv Sena had proposed the name of Mohan Bhagwat as the candidate for the post of President of India. Both Mohan Bhagwat and Pranab Mukherjee have clearly ruled out any possibility of them being in the race for the top constitutional post.
