Actor-turned-politician and now BJP’s Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol came under intense attack from the opposition after he appointed a Mohali-based screenwriter, Gurpreet Singh Palheri, as his representative for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat.
A letter issued on the letterhead of the Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol, dated June 6, stated “I hereby appoint Gurpreet Singh Palheri, son of Supinder Singh, resident of village Palheri, district Mohali, Punjab, as my representative to attend meetings and follow important matters pertaining to my Parliamentary constituency, Gurdaspur (Punjab), with concerned authorities.”
The Congress lashed out at Sunny Deol and called it a ‘betrayal” of the peoples’ mandate. Congress Punjab Chief Sunil Jhakar said ‘In marketing, the customer is always right, in democracy, a voter is always right. One has to accept it. Voters never expected anything from him other than a selfie with him’.

While Sunny Deol’s nominee Gurpreet Singh, who is also known as ‘Gyani Ji’ in film industry circles, said that he been appointed just for assisting Sunny Deol in her electoral work. Speaking to media, he said, ‘I am not replacing Sunny Deol. I have just joined just like a personal assistant of Sunny Deol and will look after his work in the constituency’.
He added, In the absence of Sunny Deol, I along with other BJP leaders, will sit in the official meetings’.
Singh further asserted that he has been living in Pathankot since Sunny Deol won the election and have been going in the field every day.
He further claimed that Sunny Deol is working in Delhi and is participating in the Lok Sabha Sessions pushing for the welfare of Gurdaspur. He added, ‘You will soon hear good news related to the development of Gurdaspur.”
In the recent national polls, Sunny Deol defeated Congress sitting MP Sunil Jarkhar from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat with a margin of over 80,000 votes. Deol in the recently held polls secured 5,51,177 votes against 4,74,168 of Congress’s Sunil Jakhar.
