Despite in a country where table tennis a sport in which people take less interest, Sharath Kamal hopes to get more out of him and is not ready to settle yet. He achieved his career highest ranking of No. 32 in May 2015 before a spate of injuries made him see a downfall in his rankings. And now he is hoping to go one step further and break into the top-30 of the world rankings.

Sharath feels that age is just a number and he has still not thought about his retirement and said he is playing his best game at the age of 34. Talking about his future plans, “I’m taking it year on year. I don’t want to plan too long because I don’t know how fit I will be physically and mentally. I have a family. So, a lot of things have to be considered before going into a major tournament. The next important goal is the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. I also have the 2020 Olympics at the back of my mind.”

He believes that future generation of table tennis players will make their places in the top-20 or top-10 and will prove to be tough competitors for foreign players.
