Saudi Arabia has denounced the United States president’s move to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, according to a statement released by the country’s Saudi Press agency early on Tuesday.

According to Reuters news reports, the statement stated, “Attempts to impose fait accompli do not change the facts.” The statement added that the Golan Heights region was an “occupied Syrian Arab land in accordance with the relevant international resolutions”.

While asserting that the US move would generate negative environment over the peace process, the statement added saying, “It will have significant negative effects on the peace process in the Middle East and the security and stability of the region.”

US President Donald Trump, with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s presence, who is on an official visit to Washington, has inked a proclamation on Monday to officially granting the US recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights – Israeli territory.

The Saudi press agency statement described Monday’s declaration as a clear violation of the international law and the United Nations charter.

Trump has on Thursday said its time for America to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

This announcement signals a shift into the US policy ahead of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House next week, according to Dawn news reports.
