US President Donald Trump has on Sunday, announced the United States department of homeland security secretary, Kristjen Nielsen, has stepped down from her post.

According to ANI news reports, Trump said the US customs and border protection commissioner Kevin McAleenan was chosen to replace Nielsen’s position as the acting secretary for the department of homeland security.

In his twitter handle, the US president announced: “Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service.”

In another tweet, Trump wrote: “I am pleased to announce that Kevin McAleenan, the current US customs and border protection commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for @DHSgov. I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!”

According to several White House officials, Nielsen’s resignation has come amid Washington Post’s report from last year in November, alleging that Nielsen, 46-year-old, was on a verge of being fired by the US president.

Trump was, reportedly, at loggerheads with Nielsen over the implementation of the immigration laws.

The development has come as Trump was pushing for a barricade to be constructed at the US border along with the Mexican border in order to put an end to migration flow, drug, and human trafficking.
