West Bengal's CM Mamata Banerjee

On December 21, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended Pre-Christmas event at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, she appreciated the college’s decision of starting a law school from the next session, but also expressed the issue of existing 60% reservation for students in PG courses graduated  from affiliated colleges while the remaining seats are for outside students, who are able to take admission through admission tests.

“Many students have told me that we are studying law but where will we go? I congratulate St. Xavier’s University on their decision to start a law school from next academic session. I have already spoken with education minister Partha Chatterjee and told him that we must cooperate with each other. There should not be any restriction. I feel that if St. Xavier’s college students want to get an opportunity to study at Presidency University why should the later not allow that? Or why should Calcutta University not allow someone to study by saying that their standard is very high? Students from St. Xavier’s University and St. Xavier’s College should be allowed to go for higher studies to CU, JU as well as they can come to St. Xavier’s.”

It has been noticed that there are chances of eradicating the reservations that exist in the Post Graduation admissions for affiliated colleges.

She added ” What is the problem? I feel there should be unity among universities which should be done by bringing a law. I have already discussed the matter with the higher education department also. This is becoming a problem. A student may be studying with one subject at a particular college affiliated to a university. But if he or she wants to pursue higher education in a different subject, they should be allowed to do so. As per standard, one should allow such transfer”.

A State University’s Vice-Chancellor said that once CBCS implemented by all universities, only then this movement shall be functional.

CM also enquires Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das about the construction of their new campus at New Town on a plot given by the government. With regards to this, the CM advised the university to have a ” bigger and more open heart” while providing admission to the new candidates. ” In JU even if governer makes a visit, a demonstration starts,” she said.

She also suggested St. Xavier’s College authorities to start a college at Alipurduar, where there is a large presence of Christian Community seeking higher education.
