The first look from the much talked about series A Suitable Boy is out. It features actors Tabu and Ishaan Khatter resting on a wooden swing. Tabu can be seen wearing a traditional yellow outfit with white gajra in her hair and holding the face of Khatter.
Sporting a moustache and wearing a white dhoti & blue shirt, Khatter who plays Maan Kapoor — son of a renowned politician, looks mesmerized by the charm of Tabu who plays courtesan Saeeda Bai in the show. While Tabu has previously played a courtesan in a special appearance in 1996 film Jeet, it would be interesting to see her in a full fledged role of a courtesan.
Directed by Mira Nair, A suitable Boy is an adaptation of writer Vikram Seth’s popular novel of the same name. The screenplay has been written by Welsh writer Andrew Davies who is best known for House of Cards and A Very Peculiar Practice, and his adaptations of Vanity Fair, Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch, and War & Peace.
It will be produced by Lookout Point for BBC One and will be shot across various locations in India including Lucknow and Maheshwar. The six-part series that marks the second collaboration between Nair and Tabu after 2006 film The Namesake is expected to air in June next year.
Besides Tabu and Khatter, it will feature an ensemble cast that will include Tanya Maniktala as the protagonist Lata Mehra, Rasika Dugal as her sister Savita Kapoor, Shefali Shah as Rupa Mehra (mother of Lata Mehra and Savita Kapoor), Vijay Varma as Rasheed (a tutor to Saeeda Bai’s sister), Randeep Hooda as Billy Irani, Vivek Gomber as Arun Mehra (Lata’s elder brother), Ram Kapoor as Mahesh Kapoor (a renowned politician and father of Maan Kapoor), Shahana Goswami as Meenakshi and many others.
