After 10 Emmys and 279 episodes, The Big Bang Theory is finally coming to and end. The comedy show will end as TV’s longest-running multicamera comedy in history with 279 episodes – is a rare example of a long-running hit TV series that has managed to retain its massive viewing figures.

Producers Warner Bros. Television announced Wednesday that the comedy’s previously announced 12th season will be its last. “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close,” WBTV and Chuck Lorre Productions said in a joint statement.

The series debuted in 2007 has received 52 Emmy nominations, 10 wins and seven Golden Globe nominations.

In May, Jim Parsons, who plays quirky Sheldon Cooper, discussed his role on the show with The Times and what the show’s end means to him. “I look at the end of the show much like I think a devout Christian looks at death — not afraid but hopeful to see the thing that they believe in,” Parsons said. “Even though it’s not a tragedy, it’s one of those things where you’re still going to be, I would think, very moved to see the end of an era of your own life.”

Parsons’ work on the show has earned him four Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. CBS also airs a prequel about his character called Young Sheldon.

Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj, also added what he’s hoping for the finale. “I think it would be great for all the guys and the girls just to be in the living room eating Chinese food. Wouldn’t that be a loving last scene? Just talking nonsense in the end,” he told.

The final season of The Big Bang Theory will premiere on CBS Monday, September 25, at 8 p.m
