The new medical insurance scheme launched by the Kerala government along with Reliance general insurance, will come to effect from June 1.

Kerala government introduced new medical insurance scheme favouring mainly the state government employees yesterday. The scheme named, Medical Insurance for State Employees and Pensioners (MEDISEP), will now be beneficial for Kerala government employees in covering their medical needs and will come to effect from June 1. This scheme was presented in last year’s budget session of the state government. Reliance general insurance will be the partner in the scheme.

People covered under the scheme include government employees, part-time contingent staff, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, staff of the High Court, employees of LSGs, universities and pensioners in all categories.

Insurance coverage of a term of three years will be provided to the beneficiaries of the scheme. This includes the basic and the extra cover. An amount of Rs.250 will be deducted from the employees monthly under the scheme. Rs.300 will be deducted from the medical allowance of pensioners as well under the scheme.

The basic cover the scheme provides is up to Rs.2 lakh medical insurance for three years. The extra cover has an extra medical cover of Rs. 6 lakh in addition to the 2 lakh basic cover for the treatment of life threatening diseases or organ transplant. Besides there is an additional assistance for poor families struggling for medical aid even after the covers. they will be provided with Rs. 3 lakh and insurance companies will keep an insurance of 25 lakhs separate for the same.
