In a first, Supreme Court has launched a pilot project in the Warangal district of Telangana to enable the live exchange of data between the two crucial pillars of the criminal justice delivery system — the courts and the police stations.

The move comes under the umbrella of the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) which was an initiative of the e-Committee of the Supreme Court. It aims at expediting the process of delivering justice to the common man.

An official release said that the project was launched by Chairman of ICJS Justice Madan B Lokur through a video conference on December 15.

The project, on a pilot basis, was started in the Subedari Police Station of Warangal Police Commissionerate. It would allow paperless and electronic transfer of data to enhance accountability and transparency in the system. In Phase-I of the project, the police would transfer FIRs and charge sheets electronically to eCourts via ICJS.

A demo of the live exchange of data between police and courts was given during the launch of the project. In the demo, the details of FIR and chargesheet were transferred electronically to the court in real time and the court issued the receipt with the reference number.

Justice Lokur claimed that with this move, the monitoring of each case will become easier for both the police and judicial officers. He added that because the Telangana State Police has made commendable progress in Information Technology, the project was being launched in the Warangal district of Telangana.

Justice T N Radhakrishnan that the electronic exchange of data between courts and police would improve the justice delivery system.

Telangana Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy underlined that the move would eliminate redundant data entry and will bring transparency and accountability in the police, prosecution and judicial system thereby significantly improving the police-citizen interface.

Once the system runs successfully in Warangal district, it will be launched in all the districts of Telangana.
