Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee approached Election Commission of India on Tuesday to submit its complaints regarding the alleged violation of Model code of conduct and other formal laws by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Haryana is set to go for polls on October 21. Therefore the state has been put under the Model Code of conduct. Kumari Selja, speaking on the matter told ANI “We have brought some model code of conduct violations to the notice of the ECI. The election commission has assured us that they will examine and take appropriate actions.

The Congress delegation also included TPCC Chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Allegations leveled against Manohar Lal Khattar government-

  • Featuring of hoardings and advertisements carrying the name of Haryana Chief Minister and projecting his government’s “achievements” at public places even after MCC is in effect.
  • A letter was written by Haryana Chief Minister to the farmers urging them to vote for the BJP.
  • Conduct of HSSC exams right before the assembly polls to lure the candidates.
  • Extension of the services of Commissioner of Police, Sanjay Barve, just 2 days prior to his retirement on 31 August. His service was extended against the rules of ECI.

The party alleged that the government’s actions are a clear violation of the commission’s orders and the electoral laws under the Representation of People Act, 1951. Therefore it asked the ECI to do the needful and immediately order some directives.

It is up to the commission whether to take action or not. We have done our job to bring the matter to their notice.” Hooda told ANI reporters after their meeting with ECI officials.

Congress also accused officials of Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) and
Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) of acting as “political agents” of BJP government in the state.

On a related note, Kumari Selja attacked the BJP government in a series of tweets. She compared the government’s manifesto with the on-ground reality of the state.

Earlier in an interview with IANS, Kumari Selja slashed the Khattar government for not fulfilling its promises. She said “Every election brings challenges and this one is no different. The BJP government in the state made over 154 promises in its manifesto in 2014 but it has not been able to fulfill any of them.”
