The US state department has on Thursday urged Sudanese military to hand over power to the civilian transitional council making a way to a peaceful environment in the country, where people are protesting on streets on a daily basis demanding civilian rule.

In an official statement, state department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said, “The will of the Sudanese people is clear: it is time to move toward a transitional government that is inclusive and respectful of human rights and the rule of law.”

According to Reuters news reports, the United States clarified its position over Sudanese military council’s hold on the nation, since the military forced ex-President Omar al-Bashir to step down from the office on April 11, after weeks of mass protests.

A senior department official said Washington deputy assistant secretary Makila James will lead a discussion in Khartoum over ways to stabilize the country’s crisis.

While interacting with reporters, the official described Sudanese situation as “extremely fluid” and stated it was necessary to avoid a “quagmire of endless deliberations” over who should hold power.

Protesters have said they will not stop protesting until the military council does not transfer power to the civilian transitional council and the next presidential elections are held.

Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese civilians gathered outside the defence ministry on Thursday, campaigning a sit-in protest, demanding the nation’s transitional military council to hand over power to the public in order to form a civilian transitional body.
