Earlier in December 2018, The Delhi University’s Mathematics Department conducted their semester examinations, for which the results arrived on February 8, 2019, and the department witnessed massive failure, for which the students have been protesting since February 14, demanding a reevaluation. They also demanded ₹1000 fee, which is charged for revaluation, to be eradicated, and the process should be conducted for free.

After the results arrived, it was observed:

  • 35 out of 40 students who appeared for Computational Fluid Dynamics third semester examination failed.
  • 150 out of 300 students who appeared for first semester Field Theory Paper failed.
  • 130 out of 300 students who appeared for Measure and Integration paper failed.

“These results are abnormal. Most of the students are toppers from various state universities, they are people who cracked the entrance exam. If there is such massive failure, we want to see our answer sheets and see how we have been marked,” said Devendra, a second-year student.

It has also been noticed that the department witnessed a massive failure in Fourier Analysis paper also, where they demanded that the checking for the specific examinations should be lenient and they should be able to check their answer sheets further.

Looking at this situation, the students also demanded that in order to clear the backlogs of students, the department should conduct a reexamination after two months of the semester instead of waiting for the whole year to clear a backlog.

“There are so few students in the mathematics department who complete their masters in two years because of evaluation of this kind and the wait to clear backlogs and give improvement tests. Students are unable to be eligible for the NET and JRF, they can’t study further, can’t get scholarships. The final-year students will be stranded,” said Srijani Kar, a second-year student.
