The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has introduced seven new academic programmes to its curriculum which will be offered to the students from the upcoming session 2021-22.

This new programmes were launched in a virtual ceremony held by the institute. The new seven additions include six postgraduate degree programmes and one five-year Integrated programme.

An overview;

The 7 newly introduced postgraduate programmes are as follows-

  1. M.Tech. (artificial intelligence)
  2. M.Tech. (data science)
  3. M. Tech. (microelectronics and VLSI)
  4. M. Tech. (dam safety and rehabilitation)
  5. M.Des. (industrial design)
  6. MIM (masters in innovation management)
  7. MS economics (five year integrated program)

All this programmes are being offered under the various departments of IIT Roorkee. The Artificial Intelligence and Data Science programmes are being offered by CAIDS Centre.

All these programmes will provide a masters degree in the specialisation of engineering, architecture, economics, and management along with technical fields like AI and Data Science.

The motive behind;

IIT Roorkee has introduced this programmes as an step towards the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which emphasizes more on expanding the accessibility of education.

This new programmes are designed especially for working professional in such a way that along with theoretical knowledge, they can also offer practical learning to upgrade their skill set.

Professor Ashutosh Sharma, The Secretary for Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, said that such programmes helps us to create future leaders, rather then followers, which is very important for the emerging India.

About the programmes;

M. Tech. (Microelectronics and VLSI)

  • Online Three-year programme.
  • Flexible class schedule for working professionals.
  • Intends to prepare students for managerial engineering roles in the industry.

M. Tech. (dam safety and rehabilitation)

  • Two-year programme.
  • Offered under the proposed ‘International centre for dams’.
  • Any graduate from relevant field is eligible to join.

MS (Economics)

  • 5 year integrated programme.
  • Students will have an exit option after 4 years with a BS degree in economics.
  • Offered under the department of humanities and social sciences.

M. Des. (Industrial Design) and MIM (Masters in Innovation Management)

  • Two-year programmes.
  • Offered under the Department of Design.
  • Focuses on Design Innovation practices.
