Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s fans will be disappointed to know that he might not be making any more films in the future.

The director recently gave an interview to The Guardian where he talked about the current state of cinema which is mostly occupied by Superhero films and hinted a possible retirement. “I don’t know how many more I can make – maybe this is it. The last one. So the idea was to at least get it made and maybe show it for one day at the NFT, maybe one day at the Cinémathèque in Paris. I’m not kidding.”

Scorsese was talking about his recent directorial venture, the epic crime film The Irishman which marked his reunion with his long time collaborators Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. It was also the first instance of him working with Al Pacino in his career.

The 77 year old filmmaker complained about the number of screens given to superhero films because of which smaller films like Ladybird suffer.

“We are in a situation now where the theatres are only showing the latest superhero films. You have 12 screens – and 11 are the superhero films. You enjoy superhero films, fine, but you need 11 screens?,” he said.

Talking about working with De Niro and Pesci, Scorsese said, “It’s not necessarily a culmination, but a sense of contemplation of where we are, near the end of our lives.”

The Irishman started streaming on Netflix from 27 November and has met with critical acclaim.
