Along with Oppo’s recent concept phone announcement and TCL’s concept devices, rollable displays are the next smartphone trend after folding displays. LG already has a rollable TV on its lineup priced at $60,000 and the company also recently filed for the “Rollable” name, supposedly for an LG-made smartphone with a slide out display. The company also may be dabbling with the idea of a future laptop.

The latest patent of LG shows a new laptop form factor, one which will involve a 17-inch display that rolls up to stow away. The display can unroll to anywhere from a 13.3-inch to 17-inch display size.

On the basis of an image released online, it looks like the keyboard and touchpad can also fold onto itself to take up less space even when it is not being used. This is an interesting concept and we wonder if and when LG will have a concept to show the public.

Hardware companies normally patent designs that may never go past the drafting stage. Rollable or not, everyone is excited to see that companies are pushing the limits of a design and functionality and displays are a major part of that.
