Supreme court will hear pleas related to clashes in Jamia Milia Islamia University on Tuesday. The apex court has also issued a stern warning to the students to stop riots.

Reacting on the destruction of property and violence in the college campus, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said that if violence and destruction of property continues, they will refrain from hearing the case. SA Bobde said, “Just because they happen to be students, it doesn’t mean they can take law and order in their hands, this has to be decided when things cool down. This is not the frame of mind when we can decide anything. Let the rioting stop.”

Senior advocate Indira Jaising mentioned Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University incidents before a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde on Monday. Jaising asked Supreme Court to take suo-motu cognizance of the issue saying ‘It’s a serious violation of human rights all over the country.’

CJI Bobde further said that they will determine the rights but not in the atmosphere of riots. He said that suo-motu cognizance will be taken only after riots stop. “We are not against rights and peaceful demonstrations“, he said.

Two FIRs over property damage and riots have been registered by Police in connection with violence during protests in Jamia Nagar area yesterday.

The national capital turned into a war zone after students of Jamia Millia Islamia in south Delhi carried out a protest march against the citizenship law and ended in violence on Sunday evening. At least three buses and over a hundred two-wheelers were set ablaze, batons and teargas were used and the police were seen chasing protesters through the streets.

Nearly 100 students of Jamia, who had distanced themselves from the violence, have been detained, while senior officers of the Delhi Police privately admitted local thugs hijacked the march, setting vehicles ablaze and pelting stones at police when they tried to stop their protest march to Jantar Mantar.
