The Karnataka I-T Department and election authorities jointly seized unaccountable cash worth Rs. 80 lakh from BJP functionaries in Uttara Kannada. The houses of Krishna R Devadiga, R Hedge and KG Naik were raided. BJP General Secretary Krishna Rama Devadiga was caught with Rs. 9,20,000 in envelops carrying Rs. 5000 each. Ramakanth Hegde, a local leader of BJP was also caught with Rs.71 lakh. The residence of KG Naik, the president of BJP, Uttara Kannada was also searched.
“We have seized bundles of cash kept in envelopes and we are probing if it was used to woo voters,” senior election official said. Raids were earlier carried out at the offices of Congress-JD(S) candidates including Kamal Nath, Jayadeva Galla, Rizwan Arshad.
The Karnataka government had sought the transfer of TR Balakrishnan, I-T official from Karnataka. “By selectively targeting our candidates, Balakrishnan is trying to show that only we are flush with funds and not any candidate of the BJP,” said Gundu Rao, state president of Congress.
The Congress party had alleged that the Modi government was targeting agencies like the I-T Department and the Enforcement Directorate and said that the people of India would give their response to this.
