In support of India’s data localisation measures, Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, has opened its second data centre in India, with a new ‘availability zone’ in Mumbai.

Talking about the availability zone, Alibaba said, it is a physical area with the independent power grid, and each one is made up of one or more data centres. The new zone will over product lines such as elastic computing, storage, database, network, application services, and big data analytics to support the requirements of local governments and enterprises.

By March 2019, the company is looking to train 1,000 sales and technology personnel in India, in order to strengthen its network.

Alibaba Cloud competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft in this space in India. Earlier this year in January, Alibaba had opened its first data centre in the country.

Alibaba is focusing on catering to the growing cloud computing needs of the small and medium enterprises in India, as they look to scale their business using technology.

“Alibaba Cloud has always empowered enterprises of all sizes to tap into opportunities in the digital age. The commencement of the second availability zone reiterates our focus on India as a key market in Alibaba Cloud’s global expansion strategy,” Alex Li, general manager, Alibaba Cloud India, said in a statement.

Recently, Alibaba came out in support of Paytm and India’s data localisation policy, in order to foster data security. Paytm had accused Google Pay of sharing payments data of Indian users with affiliate companies.
